To that end, we have created an event that combines the elements of prestigious national and pro level events--comprehensive media coverage (including online video and print) high-quality route-setting, a premier format (a redpoint qualifier to a World Cup final), other special events, and financial assistance in the form of a cash & gear Scholarship Purse--all designed exclusively for junior competitive climbers.

Who can compete?

The purpose of the JBI is to bring together the most talented and passionate young competitors in the US for an event that will showcase their abilities and reward their dedication. Anyone who has received an invite from JIBS can compete. Invitation letters will be sent out in multiple rounds beginning the first of January, 2010 and running through the end of the month. The selection criteria for the JBI is based on a number of criteria, including:

   1) Participation in ABS Youth Nationals

   2) Rankings in ABS Youth Regional events

   3) Performance in other major events, such as the Mammut series.

In addition, any youth climber who participated in the 2009/2010 JIBS series is also eligible to compete in the JBI.

If you did not receive an invitation to the JBI, and you feel there has been an error, then please contact us at info@philarockgym.com.

Category Information: see Comp Format

Comp Format

The basic format will be a Redpoint Qualifier to select for a World Cup style Finals.

The Qualifier

The Redpoint qualifier will include between 65 and 80 boulder problems on a range of grades. Competitors will be ranked within their category based on their top five highest valued climbs.  In this round, falls will not count against a climber; instead ties are broken by adding a modest bonus (10% of the value of a problem) to any of the top five which were sent onsight (i.e. first try, with no falls). In addition, should two climbers be tied after their top five are totaled & any onsight bonuses are applied, ties will be broken by looking at the value of the 6th highest problem, or the 7th, and so on until the tie is broken, or the 10th problem is examined, whichever comes first. Competitors will get approximately 3 hrs to climb.

The Finals

The top 10 climbers from each Category (see below) will move on to Finals on Saturday evening. Finals will be a World Cup style event, competitors having 5 minutes to reach high-point on 3 separate problems. The Finals scores will be winner take all--the best total overall score with the fewest falls will determine rank--except in the event of a tie. In the event of a tie, scores from the Redpoint round may be used to break the tie, or a Super-final, at the Head Judges discretion.

Category Information:  For the purposes of ranking and scholarships, the JBI includes four categories:

     Male13 & Under  |  Male 14-19                     Female 13 & Under   |   Female 14-19

As you can see, the JBI uses a broader category range than standard youth comps, but cut-offs for those categories are similar. To determine your category, use the following guide:

Those climbers born in and after 1997 (i.e. Youth C or D) will climb in the 13 & Under category.

Those climbers born from 1996-1991 (i.e. Youth B, A or Junior) will climb in the 14 -19 category.
