JIBS is a
local Bouldering Series dedicated to promoting Junior Bouldering in the Capital
Region and surrounding area. Every year participating gyms host a series of
local junior bouldering competitions in partnership with the ABS and USAC
Climbing.
JIBS
holds each competition under USAC
guidelines. For those familiar with bouldering competitions, all JIBS comps
are red-point format, scoring the top 5 problems sent for each competitor. Falls
are not counted against a climber, and there are bonuses for onsighting
problems.
Each
competitor will receive a rank based on his or her placement at their best 3
local comps. This will be combined with their score from
Regional Championships to determine their
overall rankings and awards.
Any
junior climber may participate in any JIBS competition, regardless of age,
ability or experience. Climbers who wish to be eligible for the
JIBS Scholarships must meet the minimum
requirements, however--3 Local Events & Regional Championships.
JIBS
competitors who meet our requirements also meet the minimum requirements for
qualification for Junior Bouldering Nationals. For more information
JIBS was
founded to encourage junior climbers to train, grow and excel in this sport. The
Regional Rankings are used to help coaches and competitors focus their training
and encourage development.
In
addition to medals and recognition, the Regional Champion (those who have attended at least 3 comps, and
Regional Championships) in each age-group will
receive a scholarship to cover travel costs for climbing related
endeavors, such as clinics, travel costs for competitions or outdoor climbing
trips. In addition, one scholarship will be awarded to the
competitor who best exemplifies the spirit of Junior Bouldering. To be eligible
for that scholarship, such a climber must meet the minimum requirements (see
above) and must also:
-- Be nominated by their team (one candidate per team)
-- Submit a short essay (500 words or less), describing their
experience in competitive bouldering and climbing in general, and
what they would use the scholarship to accomplish, and how it would
improve their climbing.
-- Submit a recommendation by their coach (500 words or less).
These submissions will be reviewed by a jury to select the best
candidate for the scholarship. These scholarships may be used for
any travel related expenses that will contribute to the furthering
of a competitors ambitions in the sport (competition entry fees for
National Level events, travel costs for competitions, clinics or
climbing trips). This scholarship is open to any competitor in good
standing; however, as we wish to support as many dedicated
individuals as possible, we will not award more than one scholarship
per athlete. Therefore, should a candidate win the Spirit
Scholarship, and also win his or her age group, that candidate will
only receive the scholarship for his/her championship. The Spirit
Scholarship, in such a case, would be awarded to the runner up in
the essay contest.
It is our goal to encourage young climbers to gain as much
experience as possible in this fantastic sport. These awards are, we
feel, a good start in recognizing the achievements and continuing
needs of our young athletes, promoting and elevating the prestige of
Junior Competitive Climbing, and developing a regional community
which supports its young athletes.
Deadline for essay and recommendation submissions is December 15,
