How does it work?
The Summer Climbing Competition Series consists of five climbing competitions, including the ever popular Sun Burn and four new events as well. Each event will follow a format unique to that event, and awards will be based for each event on performance in that event. Each format is outlined in the tab below, and will be explained in detail at the beginning of each event as well.
All five competitions are open events for all categories.
-
What are the formats?
There are three styles of dynos:
-
- Distance
- Two Hand Precision
- Freestyle
- Climbers will be assigned to small groups. Each small group will have a set period of time to climb one group of dynos that are of the same style.
- The group will be given a rest period after their time is up, and then they will move onto the next style of dynos.
- Groups will rotate through all three styles of dynos, with the goal of completing as many dynos as possible.
- Each participant will be scored on the total number of dynos he/she completed. Falls/attempts will be used to break ties.
- Participants will be assigned a number of boulder problems based on their respective category.
- The problems are to be climbed by participants without the use of their hands.
- After each attempt on a problem, participants will be given a score based on the highest hold they were able to show control on with their feet.
- At the end of the event, each participant will have a high score for each problem they were assigned. A participant’s final score is the total of their high scores. Falls/attempts will be used to break ties.

- Participants will be assigned a number of boulder problems based on their respective category.
- The problems are to be climbed by participants as fast as possible.
- After each attempt on a problem, participants will be given a time-score based on how quickly the problem was completed. Participants do not receive scores for attempts where they did not complete the problem.
- At the end of the event, each participant will have a fastest time-score for each problem they were assigned. A participant’s final score is the total of their fastest time-scores. The lower the better! Falls/attempts will be used to break ties.
- A participant must complete each assigned problem at least once in order to receive a final score.
- The event consists of five climbing disciplines:
- Slab
- Dynos
- Top-Outs
- Bouldering
- Routes
- Each climbing discipline will have its own ranking (i.e. winners, etc.) for each category. Participants may enter any number of disciplines that they wish.
- Participants will be scored on the number of problems/routes they complete, with number of attempts serving as a tiebreaker (the less attempts, the better).
*Please note: The Route portion of the event will have leadable routes for all participants; however, leading will only be required for Open competitors (in Finals). All competitors who lead must either be currently certified for lead at a PRG location or through an equivalent course. The PRG reserves the right to revoke or refuse Lead Climbing privileges for any climber at any time, for any reason.
Youth, Novice, and Amateur Competitors
Participants who compete in all five disciplines will be given an overall score based on how they rank among their category in each discipline. The climber who ranks highest in each discipline wins the Overall Title for their category.
Open Competitors
Open Qualifiers will consist of the following:
Each climber must complete at least one routes/problem in each of the 5 disciplines in order to be eligible for Open Finals. Ranking will consist of the highest average number of sends across disciplines. The top 50% or 8 climbers (whichever is smaller) in each gender will qualify for finals. Open Finals will be a modified World Cup format consisting of 2 Boulder Problems and 1 Route. Climbers will have 5 minutes to climb each (route or problem) to high point, using falls to break ties. There will be a 5 minute rest in between problems/routes.
**Please note: All formats are subject to change at any time, subject to the discretion of the PRG. Please call or check back for updated information.
